Drainage, Erosion, Deposition

Earthwork, 2019, Unison Arts Center

This intervention is an experiment in allowing the ditch, one of the earliest human earthworks, to be reclaimed by the water and soil, modifying the landscape and then observing these elements taking their natural course. The water will mix with the soil - high in clay with rich ochre tones. We will see how these ditches erode, drain standing water from a higher area to a lower. Many roots were left intact, exposing the natural lattice formed in the forest earth, and creating natural dams. There are areas of width and depth, where water may pool, and shallowness and narrowness, where it is encouraged to move forward, to be gradually drained away. We will see a shift in the landscape, a combination of human intervention and natural erosion and deposition.
